Action Group Native Americans & Human Rights (at that time Big Mountain Action Group) e.V. on October 1st, 1999, published the new book of Indian poet Lance Henson, Songs In The Enemy's Language, as a bilingual edition in both English and German. Lisa Schnorf painted the pictures for this edition.
Also, Action Group Native Americans & Human Rights e.V. organized an extended reading tour with Lance Henson for promotion, where he read from his book.
On this web page there will also soon be an editorial text with a detailed presentation of this work, and when it is published, we will put some samples from the book online - as sort of an appetizer.
Some words about the author
»Like the badger he is capable of holding stubbornly to the things he believes in, even when confronted by those seemingly more powerful than he.«
Joseph Bruchac
»Within a single poem, like a candle lit in a dark window, a life sings. Outside, the great silence of the prairie moves within to shape the language. It's as if an enormous moment has been registered, giving significance and resonance to the words.«
Roger Weaver
Oklahoma State University
»For Henson the revolution is symbolized in nature. It is deeply rooted in the consciousness of his Cheyenne ancestors and the indigenous poets at all places and in all times. Each of his last words speak the language of the First Peoples.«
Norma Wilson
»Lance Henson's poetry uses the wealth of its cultural identity to give the Tsistsistas (Cheyenne for »human being«) new self-confidence for the future.«
